Why do I bleed when I masturbate?!

Believe it or not, you are not the only one! This is a relatively common question…with a not so easy answer.

First, how are you masturbating? If it’s inserting anything into the vagina, there are a couple of possibilities:

  • You are irritating the vaginal wall with a nail or friction.

  • Your cervical tissue is bleeding due to irritation (like an STI).

  • You have a sensitivity (allergy-like reaction) to whatever you are inserting into the vagina.

Second, are you close to your period? If so, uterine contraction with orgasm can cause some tissue and blood vessels to flow and cause some spotting.

Lastly, if you aren’t inserting anything into the vagina NOR are you close to your period, it still may be totally normal—so don’t panic! However, it’s best that you see a doctor to make sure everything looks alright down there. There are a couple of things that may cause abnormal bleeding like endometriosis, sexually-transmitted infections or growths on your cervix that you want to make sure are not the cause. But really, everything is likely totally fine! Just get it checked out.
