<image:title>Male anatomy - Testicles</image:title>
<image:caption>Those with male anatomy have a scrotal sac (scrotum) that sits underneath the penis. Within the scrotum are two testicles: a left and a right. You might notice that one hangs lower than the other and that one may be slightly bigger than the other — both findings are super normal. One thing that is not normal is pain. Pain in the testicles CAN be an emergency. If you have new or severe pain in one testicle, swelling of a testicle or pain to touch of one testicle, get to a doctor right away. The testicles themselves should feel mostly smooth (though there is a lump on the middle upper backside of each testicle that is usually normal). It’s important that you do take a feel every once in a while to make sure there aren’t any other bumps on the testicles (see the link below for more guidance).</image:caption>

<image:title>Male anatomy - Body and facial hair</image:title>
<image:caption>There’s a lot of attention and countless products that are specifically directed at facial hair care. However, many of those with male anatomy are also interested in grooming their private hair. The skin of the private area is just as sensitive as the skin on the face, so proper technique and appropriate products are just as important in avoiding ingrown hairs and razor burn.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e869027d734b52f6ab07602/1643222047660-JLHM8YRNUCQJZ6ZBKWW8/unsplash-image-kQIRZiMpV4o.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Male anatomy - Penises</image:title>
<image:caption>Where to begin? There are so many uncertainties about penis shape and size, but here are the facts (spoiler alert: there’s a HUGE range of “normal” when it comes to penises): First, what’s the average size? Studies have identified that the average length of an erect penis (pubic bone to tip) is around 5 inches. Size is mostly genetic (believe it or not, your MOM carries these genes) and, no, there aren’t any miracle creams or medications that will make the penis any larger — with one exception. A length less than 3 inches after puberty may have a hormonal cause which a doctor can help address. Second, are there any sizes or shapes that are problematic? Overall, no! Penises can be wider at the base and narrower at the tip, wider at the tip and narrower at the base, or they may be the same thickness or girth throughout the entire shaft. Even a slight bend in the penis (up, down or to one side) is very common. There is one exception to this as well. Peyronie’s disease is a problematic bend in the penis, usually caused by scarring. Bring it up with your doctor if you have a firm nodule in the bend of the penis, a dent in the shaft, painful erections, painful peeing and/or if the bend is getting worse. Lastly, noticing any lumps or bumps? STIs (or sexually-transmitted infections) are one cause but there are certainly other more common culprits. A lymphocele is a small bump under the shaft of the penis and is usually caused by lots of ejaculation. It should go away within a few days or so. Fordyce spots are little sweat glands that might give the skin on your foreskin or testicles the look of chicken skin. Super normal and nothing to worry about. Finally, pearly penile papules are little dewdrops around the glans. Again, normal and may go away with time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Female anatomy - Vaginal issues</image:title>
<image:caption>Because the vagina is essentially the gatekeeper between the outside world and the inside of the body, it’s got a lot of important duties. Good bacteria live in the vagina and produce an acidic environment (which contributes to a vinegar-like smell). Discharge from the vagina and cervix clears out waste and prevents bad bacteria from entering the body. Glands from within and around the vagina produce oils that coat the skin and vaginal opening. But even if we KNOW that discharge and a little smell can be healthy, it doesn’t make them less concerning. Here are a few issues that occur when vaginal function goes awry: Itching: there are lots of little glands that release oils into the vulva. They can build up and collect dead skin cells, ultimately sticking into skin folds. An occasional itch can usually be helped with gentle vulva cleansing (not IN the vagina). However, if it’s really bad or if you have other symptoms (like a strong odor or funny discharge) check with a doc. Strong smells: a little sour or vinegary smell is absolutely healthy. However, heavy clothing or lots of sweating can make the odor worse. Keep the air flowing with loose clothing and light underwear. Of course, if you’re at risk of an STI or BV (read on) check with a doc. Yeast infections: yeast can actually live IN the vagina and be totally healthy! However, sometimes the yeast takes over and causes a yeast infection. This usually looks like white, clumpy discharge with lots of itching and burning. The vaginal skin may also appear red. Bad luck and antibiotics are big causes of yeast infections, so don’t be embarrassed if this is you! You can either get a medicine from the drugstore or a prescription from your doctor. BV (bacterial vaginosis): while it CAN be spread by sex, BV is more commonly NOT related to sex. It’s when a bad bacteria grows in the vagina and causes a fishy smell. Your discharge might be more green and your vagina more itchy. It’s easily diagnosed and treated by a doc! UTIs (urinary tract infections): the pee hole (urethra) for females is very short and sits right in front of the vagina, which makes it very easy for bacteria to get into the bladder from the outside world. Anything that exposes the urethra and bladder to more bacteria can be an issue, though some struggle with UTIs (urinary tract infections) more than others. While nothing has been shown 100% to eliminate UTIs, there are some practices that have been shown to be beneficial, including drinking LOTS of water like 2-3 liters a day), peeing after vaginal penetration and wiping from front to back.</image:caption>

<image:title>Female anatomy - Body hair, stretch marks and cellulite</image:title>
<image:caption>Whether it’s private, facial or leg hair, shaving or waxing is NOT necessary. However, many folks wish to do so to some level of hair management. See the link below for shaving tips that reduce skin irritation and ingrown hairs. Stretch marks happen to most people to varying degrees. There are actually 2 different kinds of stretch marks: striae alba (white) and striae rubra (red). Not only are they different colors, but they’re caused by different changes in the skin. There is nothing wrong with either type of stretch mark, but many wonder if there’s anything to be done about them. Stretch marks generally get better and less noticeable with time, and protection from the sun (with sunscreen) usually helps reduce the discoloration. However, if you find yourself really bothered by them you can talk with your doctor about some options for improvement. There’s a topical medication option as well as dermatology procedures for both types of stretch marks. Cellulite is another incredibly common skin occurrence. It happens more in females than males, affecting almost 90% of those with female anatomy! Carrying extra weight CAN make it more pronounced, but even thin people get cellulite. It’s just a way our bodies store fat below the skin.</image:caption>

Here are a few things that should NOT cause you to worry: Lopsided breasts (one is larger than the other) Inverted nipples (on one or both breasts) Little bumps in the areola (around the nipple itself); these are glands Little hairs in the areola Large areola It’s also a good idea to get to know what your breast tissue feels like when you’re young so that you can pick up on changes as you age.</image:caption>

<image:title>Female anatomy - Vaginas vs vulvas</image:title>
<image:caption>Starting with a quick anatomy lesson, the vulva describes the area surrounding the vaginal opening and includes the inner and outer labia. Here’s what’s important to know about a healthy vulva: Skin can be darker Skin can be lighter Labia minora (the inner folds of skin) can be longer or shorter Labia minora can be wrinkly Labia minora can be lopsided Labia can have little dots that look like white pimples—these are sweat glands (Fordyce spots) and are totally normal Clear-white vaginal discharge every day is normal Discharge may smell a little sour or vinegary While odor and discharge can make some people feel uncomfortable, they are both signs of a healthy vagina. The vagina actually works very hard to keep things safe and clean — which is why it’s important to never clean INSIDE the vagina. It’s okay to use a gentle soap on the labia and other folds of the vulva (especially because oil and dead skin cells can build up and cause smegma) but never use soap or water inside of the vagina. It’s got its own self-cleaning system. There are a few reasons why a vagina might have an especially strong odor, including STIs and BV. However, an easy first step to controlling odor is to improve airflow down there. Check out the link below for “breathable” cotton underwear and talk with a doctor if things still smell (or feel) abnormal. (Wanna learn more about the hymen? Check this out.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Periods - Why we bleed</image:title>
<image:caption>Whether we like it or not, many bodily functions are directly and solely related to making babies. Periods are one of those things! Let’s cover a few basic definitions before we discuss. A fetus (what we call a baby-in-development) is created when a sperm (from someone with testicles) “fertilizes” an egg (in someone with ovaries). The only time an egg can be accessed is after something called “ovulation” which is the term for one ovary releasing an egg into the uterus. It hangs out for about 24 hours and then passes out of the vagina if it isn’t fertilized by a sperm. (You can learn more about pregnancy by clicking the link below). Now, on to periods. The uterus spends about a week every month building up a nice, comfy environment in preparation for a “maybe baby” — you know, just in case. When the uterus is super sticky and welcoming, an egg is released from an ovary into the uterus (ovulation). If the egg fails to be fertilized by a sperm (which happens the vast majority of the time), it simply passes through the uterus and out of the vagina,. The uterus then thinks, “dang! missed that one! let’s freshen up and try again later.” For the next couple of weeks the uterus prepares to shed its lining and then, when it’s ready, releases it in the form of a period. (Think of this process kinda like peeling an orange.) After the shedding (period) is complete, it starts the process all over again. And that’s the period cycle.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>

<image:title>Periods - Schedule</image:title>
<image:caption>As discussed above, periods are a sign that the body has matured to a point that carrying a fetus is possible (though, again, not going to happen during most, if any, period cycles). This occurs a couple of years into puberty around the age of 12.5, though age definitely varies from person to person. Ultimately, period should be quite predictable (meaning that you can know ahead of time when your period should be coming). However, it’s VERY normal for periods to be irregular during the first couple of years. When things finally settle into place, a period should happen every 21-45 days (anywhere within that huge range is considered average) and the bleeding last for 3-7 days. Bleeding is usually most heavy on day 2 but lightens during subsequent days. But if it’s been a few years and you’re still off, check out the section below (and talk with your doc).</image:caption>

<image:title>Periods - The hymen</image:title>
<image:caption>Why are we talking about the hymen here? Because many individuals discover the hymen around the time of tampon or menstrual cup insertion. The hymen is a piece of tissue that surrounds the vaginal opening. It’s usually a loose flap of skin (think of curtains around a window) that needs a little stretching or loosening before anything can be inserted into the vagina (including a tampon or a penis). The way this is accomplished is different from person to person. Sometimes the hymen can tear a little while riding a bike or running around as a child. Other times the hymen will tear only after it has been penetrated by a penis or a finger (this is where the old term “popping the cherry” comes from). And because everyone’s hymen is a little different, it’s impossible to look at a hymen and determine if that person has had sexual intercourse or if anything else has been inserted into the vagina. There are some conditions when the hymen is a little…extra. Specifically, sometimes it can partially cover the vaginal opening with an extra strand of tissue (called “septate”) or completely cover the vaginal opening with or without little holes (called “cribriform” and “imperforate,” respectively). In these cases it may be difficult to fit in a tampon, finger or penis. You can look for yourself with a mirror and/or a doctor can make an official diagnosis. If you have one of these variants—don’t worry! It’s absolutely treatable, and your doctor can help you with next steps.</image:caption>

<image:title>Periods - Colors and textures</image:title>
<image:caption>Periods come in a variety of colors and textures — often rotating through them all during the same cycle! When it comes to colors, anything from brown or black-ish to bright red or pink can all be healthy. A brown/rust or black appearance just means that the blood has “oxidized” and turned a darker color. It is nothing to worry about, unless it’s accompanied by other symptoms like vaginal pain or itching. Textures can be explained by understanding what exactly is happening with a period (see above section). Thin and watery blood is generally from an exposed blood vessel in the uterus. Clumps of tissue are likely small pieces of the lining of the uterus. And mucus can arise from vaginal or cervical discharge. All are healthy!</image:caption>

<image:title>Periods - Bad behavior</image:title>
<image:caption>As discussed, it can take a couple of years for period hormones to regulate, so a wonky period schedule can be normal…at first. Now let’s say you’ve had your period for a couple of years. If you’re finding that your period still lasts longer than 7 days, or if it happens outside the “normal” window of every 21 to 45 days, you may need a little extra hormone regulation to get your period on schedule. This is accomplished with the use of birth control or a hormone burst. Check out the link to learn about the different types of birth control and how they can be used to regulate a period schedule. Another indication for birth control (or “hormone” control) is very heavy bleeding or very painful periods. Just because you have a uterus doesn’t mean you need to suffer every month. (And one last little bonus: combination birth control pills may also help with acne!)</image:caption>

<image:title>Sex & intimacy - Definitions</image:title>
<image:caption>“Virginity” is a fuzzy and, ultimately, useless concept that varies from person to person. The best way to discuss sex and intimacy is to be as straight-forward as possible because each type of sex carries its own risks (and benefits). Here are some types of sex: Oral sex is mouth to genitalia (penis, clitoris, vagina, anus). Penis-to-vagina sex is the only one that carries risk of pregnancy. Anal sex is penis to anus. Tribbing is clitoris/vagina to clitoris/vagina. Manual genital stimulation of a partner and self-stimulation (masturbation) are the only of these sexual acts that do not carry the risk of STIs.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e869027d734b52f6ab07602/1643525387751-VRSM6MDOABPMS3KOZWFQ/unsplash-image-2mOZxZV51xk.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Sex & intimacy - When to start?</image:title>
<image:caption>From a medical standpoint there is no official minimum age for sex, but you should be of an age where you can assess the pros and cons of sex, can mentally process the implications of sex and can consent to sex with a full understanding of what it entails. Only you know when you’re truly ready. It might seem like everyone is having sex, but the truth is that only about half of high schoolers (53%) are having vaginal or anal sex. Give it a lot of thought, talk with your partner and know that, whatever your decision, you are in good company. If you decide to have sex, remember a few things: Females who have vaginal sex with males are at risk of pregnancy. If you do not want to create a baby, take precautions. Guys, condoms are also a form of birth control. ANY type of sex (oral, anal and vaginal) carries the risk of transmitting STIs. The only way to protect against transmitting STIs is barrier protection in the form of male condoms or dental dams. What if you get caught up in the moment and aren’t protected? What if the condom breaks? Plan B is one of the most common forms of emergency contraception for females. It works to prevent pregnancy up to 72 hours after sex. It is not free but is available in most drug stores. Anyone, any age can buy it. (So guys, as a consenting partner, it’s nice if you offer to help pay.) Once you start having sex, you should also know how often to get STI testing and what symptoms to look out for.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sex & intimacy - Going too fast</image:title>
<image:caption>Many individuals with a penis worry that they do not last long enough during sexual interactions. However, there is actually a fairly specific definition of premature ejaculation (PE). And while the definition has historically been related to penis-to-vagina sex, it’s also possible to experience PE with penis-to-anus sex. The strict definition requires either ejaculation within 1 minute with nearly every vaginal penetration OR the inability to control ejaculation with nearly every vaginal penetration AND personal distress caused by quick ejaculation. It’s also worth noting that even though many individuals feel that they should be lasting longer in bed, studies have shown that the predominant preference among heterosexual couples is between 3 and 7 minutes. So…cut yourself some slack.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sex & intimacy - Erection difficulties</image:title>
<image:caption>Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the inability to get an erection or to keep an erection firm enough for sexual activity. By this definition, it is possible to have ED but still be able to masturbate with orgasm. And while the chance of having ED increases with age, it is still very possible to have ED as a teenager. So what are the causes of ED? This will be different as you get older (and/or develop health conditions that impair blood flow like diabetes or high blood pressure), but here are some of the most common risk factors for developing ED in teens and young adults: Obesity Smoking Sitting for long periods of time (like watching a lot of TV) Frequent and prolonged bike-riding Peyronie’s (or a problematic bend in the penis) Heavy use of alcohol or drugs Depression or anxiety Certain types of antidepressants Performance anxiety Relationship problems</image:caption>

<image:title>Sex & intimacy - Painful vaginal penetration</image:title>
<image:caption>Despite what you may have seen or heard, it’s normal if vaginal penetration hurts the first few times. This is generally because the hymen has to stretch or break (which is also what can cause some spotting or bleeding after the first few times of vaginal penetration). Thereafter, painful vaginal penetration may be due to a few other things. The first consideration is tension in the muscles within the vaginal wall. You may or may not be aware that you’re feeling tense, but the best way to approach this is clear your mind of previous painful experiences, relax and try a little (or a lot) of foreplay. Foreplay will also help increase the moisture in the vaginal canal which can also contribute to painful penetration. A little bit of lube is also a great idea. STIs (sexually-transmitted infections) can also cause painful intercourse, so keep up with regular STI checks. Finally, some individuals struggle with painful penetration for medical reasons. Skin conditions (such as lichen sclerosis), vaginismus (pelvic muscle contraction in anticipation of vaginal penetration) and vulvodynia (vulvar pain syndrome) can all be causes of vaginal pain. The good news is that there are some interventions for all of these conditions, so talk with your doc to get more information (and check out the video link).</image:caption>

<image:title>Sex & intimacy - Orgasm difficulties</image:title>
<image:caption>No matter what the anatomy, it’s possible to struggle with achieving orgasm. Figuring out why this is happening begins with an understanding of what area(s) of the body experience sexual arousal. The source of pleasure for those with male anatomy is primarily the penis, but the testicles and anus can also provide pleasure. The main source of pleasure for those with female anatomy is the clitoris, while the vagina, anus and nipples can also experience pleasure. So anyone struggling with orgasm should start by considering the parts of their own body that are most receptive to sexual arousal (and no two people will be exactly alike — so whatever you discover is okay!). Once you’ve identified your areas of pleasure, try mixing up the focus of stimulation with your partner. Try different positions and keep an open mind. Mental health and wellness can also play a major role in the ability to orgasm. This may be in the form of an emotional connection with your partner (in which case, spend more time connecting and communicating wants and needs). This may also be in the form of a formal mental health diagnosis. Depression and anxiety can certainly interfere with the ability to orgasm, as can the medications that treat them. And if you’re comfortable, you can discuss orgasm issues with your doctor. While there is unlikely to be anything PHYSICALLY causing your problem, there are things we can test for or rule out that may be making your orgasming difficult.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pregnancy - What are the chances?</image:title>
<image:caption>We’re gonna break this down into a “choose your adventure” activity. Start here if you’re worried that you’ve done something that might cause pregnancy. First question: what private parts were involved? Penis and vagina: continue to next question Penis and female anus: only in VERY limited circumstances is this a pregnancy risk, and that is if there was ejaculation and the semen spread to the vaginal opening. Skip to fourth question. Any other combo: congrats! No risk! Second question: was at least one individual wearing one layer of clothing? Nope, totally naked: continue to next question Yes (which implies there was no penetration): really, no risk (see question below). Third question: was there vaginal penetration? Nope, just touching: very, very minimal risk IF the penis was in the area of the vaginal opening and there was precum or ejaculation. Yes: continue to next question. Fourth question: did the person with the penis ejaculate? Nope: there is still a risk of sperm getting into the vagina through precum. Next question. Yes: continue to next question. Fifth question: were you using some form of protection (condom and/or birth control)? Nope: this is the riskiest scenario. See the previous question to know where in the menstrual cycle is the most likely to result in pregnancy. Yes: good work! If you’re using birth control exactly as recommended, the chance of pregnancy is minimal. For more information on pregnancy risk rates with “typical use” (meaning, imperfect use), check out the following page:</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e869027d734b52f6ab07602/1643583941528-Y9W4IT2BLUTHZTL9S3WT/unsplash-image-urTBnMtWWYc.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Pregnancy - How it happens</image:title>
<image:caption>This is pretty basic, but in order to understand if you or your partner is at risk you need to understand the equipment and events that are involved in pregnancy. This is also helpful in understanding how birth control and emergency contraception work. Check out the link below. A couple of important points: The 5 days leading up to ovulation and the 24 hours after ovulation are the times of highest risk for pregnancy. If you ovulate close to the end of your period, you might be in that window (though it’s unlikely; most folks are around 7-10 days later). The other risk is pre-ejaculate. Even if he didn’t cum inside of you, pre-ejaculate (precum) often contains small amounts of sperm. Sperm, whether from ejaculate or precum, can live in the vagina/uterus for 3-5 days, waiting for an egg.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e869027d734b52f6ab07602/1643673873453-PPPE9ASSQXI8SX71XVJT/unsplash-image-YV593oyMKmo.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Pregnancy - Sperm survival</image:title>
<image:caption>Whether it’s post-masturbation, post-hand job or an accidental orgasm, sperm won’t survive very long if left on the skin or other surfaces (like a towel or toilet seat). Most studies show that the sperm in semen die within 3-5 minutes of time spent outside of a body (meaning not inside a testicle or a vagina), and once that semen is dry the sperm is definitely dead. Other things that kill sperm almost immediately: water (yep, just plain water), soap, hand sanitizer, chlorine in pools and hot tubs (sorry Glee fans).</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e869027d734b52f6ab07602/1643673687321-WHQOZ8WN01GU3Z0W633T/unsplash-image-p3Ip8U0eNNM.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Pregnancy - Whoops!</image:title>
<image:caption>So you reviewed everything above and you think you might be at risk of having an unwanted pregnancy. What do you do? First, don’t panic. If you’re within the first 3-5 days after having unprotected penis-to-vagina sex, you’re likely a good candidate for emergency contraception. Emergency contraception works by preventing ovulation (release of egg from ovary), fertilization (egg and sperm fuse) or implantation (fertilized egg getting stuck in uterus wall). There are actually a few forms of emergency contraception, but the morning-after pill (like Plan B and Julie) is the only type available without a doctor. The morning-after pill is most effective if taken within the first 72 hours (or 3 days) after unprotected sex. Thereafter it is much less effective. You can get the morning-after pill at any drug store without a prescription. You might have to ask the pharmacist for it but it should be given to you without question. You WILL have to pay for it so I suggest asking your partner to chip in.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Most STIs can spread between the penis and anus. Your best protection is in the form of condoms and the HPV vaccine. You also may have heard of something called anal douching (essentially washing out the anus and rectum prior to anal penetration). The goal is, perhaps obviously, that washing out will reduce the stool involved in anal sex. However, our bodies keep things relatively cleaned out down there (the muscles are great at squeezing the intestines shut) so stool shouldn’t be a major issue. More importantly, some studies have found that douching increases risk of transmitting HIV and other STIs because it can damage the healthy surface of the rectum. If you are going to douche, adding a condom can provide that added layer of protection.</image:caption>

<image:title>Safe sex - Consent</image:title>
<image:caption>Whenever you do anything intimate with someone (even if it's just touching or kissing) there should be interest and consent from both people. This is hopefully how you avoid hurting anyone or making them do something they don't want to do. Here's my advice for having sex. First, talk about it – weeks, days or hours before you anything. Make sure both of you are ready and want to have sex. Second, talk about it right before you do anything. Make sure you are both still ready and want to have sex. You should both also be in a good mindset when you have this discussion (meaning neither of you should be upset, sleepy, drunk on alcohol or high on drugs). Third, talk about it while you are having sex. Check in with one another and make sure you are both comfortable and still wanting to go forward. Lastly, if either of you say “no” or “stop” or any other words that suggest that sex is no longer wanted, stop. Silence is not consent.</image:caption>

<image:title>All about condoms - Beginner’s guide</image:title>
<image:caption>Condoms don’t have to be annoying! When used correctly, they can not only protect against STIs and pregnancy, but they can make sex and intimacy more fun! Oral sex? Try a flavored condom. Orgasming too quickly? Try a thicker condom! Want to enhance your partner’s experience? Try a textured condom! If you’re new to condoms, it’s best to focus on finding the right fit and material first, then start branching out. Check out this beginner’s guide to finding the best condom for you.</image:caption>

<image:title>All about condoms - Important points</image:title>
<image:caption>As with most birth control methods, their efficacy is dependent on how appropriately you use them. Selecting the correct size is the first step, but there are a few other key points regarding proper condom use: Never double up. This can cause friction and condoms can split/break. Never use oil-based lubricants. Instead, stick with water-based (or silicone for sensitive skin). See recipe below for your own homemade lube! Remove carefully. Hold condom around the base of the penis and pull out. You can then take off and throw away the condom in the bathroom.</image:caption>

<image:title>All about condoms - Foreskin basics</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes the foreskin isn’t completely retracted or tight when erect, and that’s okay. One thing you can try is adding some extra lube to your penis and actually rubbing the condom up and down a couple of times (once it’s on) to get your foreskin up INTO the condom. The lube will allow for easier movement of the foreskin under the condom and should help prevent crumpling/bunching. It may also help to find a condom that is a little wider at the tip. This will facilitate more comfortable movement of your foreskin.</image:caption>

<image:title>LGBTQ safe sex - Female anatomy & female anatomy</image:title>
<image:caption>First, and quite obviously, there is no pregnancy risk when there is no sperm involved. However, there is risk of sexually-transmitted infections (STIs). Whether you are engaging in oral sex (mouth to private parts) or vagina-to-vagina sex, there is a possibility that STIs can transfer between a couple, and protection can be tricky. When performing oral sex, the best form of protection is a dental dam (basically a flat piece of latex or polyurethane, like a condom) and the HPV vaccine. Unfortunately, when it comes to vagina-to-vagina sex, there isn’t a very effective form of barrier protection. So what to do? Get tested for STIs. All parties. Knowing your status beforehand (and treating any infections) is the best option at this point in time.</image:caption>

<image:title>LGBTQ safe sex - Asexuality</image:title>
<image:caption>The reason this is in the LGBTQ+ section is that asexuality challenges the heterosexual experience that predominates popular culture and many societal expectations, as is the case for others who identify with the LGBTQ+ community. However, asexuality, or not experiencing sexual arousal or attraction for others, can be a completely normal human experience. If you’re finding that you don’t experience sexual desires or arousal, you are okay. There’s plenty more to life than sex. It also doesn’t mean that you can’t be in a relationship. Some folks want companionship but do not desire sexual pleasure, and that’s just fine. If you DO desire sexual arousal but are having trouble with it, then it might be worth discussing with a doctor as some medical conditions, like depression or abnormal hormone levels, may be contributing. Alternatively, you may not have figured out what turns you on yet, and that’s okay, too! There is no rush.</image:caption>

<image:title>LGBTQ safe sex - Male anatomy & male anatomy</image:title>
<image:caption>Again, the risk of pregnancy for two individuals with the same anatomy is zero. However, there remains a risk of STI spread with oral (mouth-to-penis and mouth-to-anus) and penis-to-anus sex. The best way to prevent spread of infections is the use of condoms for both oral and anal sex, get the HPV vaccine and get tested for STIs. STI testing is recommended once at the start of sexual activity and again as needed with symptoms or after sexual contact with someone who tests positive for an STI.

<image:title>LGBTQ health - Transgender care</image:title>
<image:caption>The medical process of gender affirmation varies depending on your age. The three basic steps are puberty suppression, hormone therapy and surgery. None of these steps is essential to helping you live as your identified gender, but the purpose is to help you feel more comfortable in your own body. So let’s break these steps down. Puberty suppression is typically only offered if puberty has started but has not yet finished. For many, this is around the ages of 11 to 13. It’s in the form of a medicine that halts puberty where it’s at, basically preventing continued maturation into a gender you don’t feel comfortable with. This step is also considered to be entirely reversible, meaning once you stop the medicine puberty will continue. Puberty suppression is generally continued for a few years until you decide to proceed with hormone therapy or stop the medical gender affirmation process. Hormone therapy is what it sounds like — taking hormones of your identified gender. For male-to-female affirmation the hormone is estrogen. For female-to-male affirmation the hormone is testosterone. In most situations hormone therapy is reserved for ages 15 and up and can continue throughout the rest of your life. It’s also worth mentioning that if you have a uterus you will likely menstruate regardless of testosterone therapy. If you would like to stop your period, there are additional medications that can be administered (such as Depo). The final step of gender affirmation is surgery. This is typically offered to adults only but there are a variety of surgeries that CAN be done to help you reach your desired level of gender expression (though no surgery is necessary if not desired).</image:caption>

<image:title>LGBTQ health - Gender identity</image:title>
<image:caption>Most modern societies have a weird relationship with gender, but it doesn’t have to be so confusing. From a medical standpoint, there are male and female body parts, but those body parts do not necessarily have to match up with the gender that someone identifies with. Furthermore, gender identity does not have to be a forever state. If you feel more male or female (or both or neither) later in life, it’s your right to embody that gender. Many individuals, places of employment and communities are getting in the habit of sharing or asking folks to share their “gender pronouns” (which simply means if you prefer to be referred to as “he/him/his,” “she/her/hers” or “they/them/theirs”). If your doctor doesn’t ask, you have the right to share this with them and ask that they respect your gender identity with your preferred pronouns. They can also provide assistance if you would like more mental or physical support in reaching a place of comfort with your body (see next section).</image:caption>

<image:title>LGBTQ health - Sexuality</image:title>
<image:caption>It might seem weird to you that a doctor wants to know who you are attracted to and who you share sexual activity with. In fact, sometimes it can feel pretty awkward… “Are you sexually active? With males, females or both? Oral sex? Anal sex? Vaginal sex?” But the reason that doctors want to know, and the reason that we want you to feel comfortable sharing, is all about your health. Mental and physical health. First, different types of sex carry different risks — so we want to make sure you’re using the right kind of protection and getting the right kind of testing. Second, experiencing a sexuality that is different than societal norms can be very challenging. Doctors want to make sure that you are feeling comfortable and safe in your own skin. If you aren’t quite ready to start sharing with a doctor or your family, consider looking to other communities for acceptance and guidance.</image:caption>

<image:title>STIs - Symptoms</image:title>
<image:caption>To keep it simple, you might never know if you have an STI. Many people have symptoms (below) but many do not. For that reason it’s really important that you get testing regularly as recommended by the CDC. For those with female anatomy, symptoms might include abnormal vaginal discharge, abnormal vaginal odor, pain with sex, pain with peeing, belly pain, genital rash, genital lesions, genital warts, painful swallowing or lesions in the mouth. For those with male anatomy, symptoms might include discharge from the penis, pain with peeing, pain in the testicles, genital rash, genital lesions, genital warts, pain with swallowing or lesions in the mouth. Or symptoms might include...none at all! So get tested (next section).</image:caption>

<image:title>STIs - Types</image:title>
<image:caption>Let’s first address the lingo: an STD and an STI are essentially the same thing. STD stands for sexually transmitted disease while STI stands for sexually transmitted infection. We used to call them STDs but they aren’t, for the most part, diseases but are instead infections. So STI is the new term. STIs describes any infection that is spread primarily through sexual contact (oral, anal or vaginal). Some infections like yeast and BV (bacterial vaginosis) CAN be spread by sexual contact but they are more often caused by something else, so they aren’t considered an STI. There are a few main types of STIs. Bacterial STIs include gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis. Viral STIs include genital herpes, HPV (which causes genital warts, cervical cancer, penile cancer and throat/mouth cancer) and HIV. Parasitic STIs include trichomoniasis and pubic lice. The good news is that STIs can be avoided! Barrier protection (condoms and dental dams) and vaccines can help prevent spreading or catching an STI. Regular testing (see section below) can catch STIs that you might not know you have.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e869027d734b52f6ab07602/1643753240661-02S160XE7QP666B695ZB/unsplash-image-0jE8ynV4mis.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>STIs - Testing</image:title>
<image:caption>Adolescents are a special population for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Due to some unique aspects of puberty and development, those under 25 are more likely to catch and transmit STIs. This is why testing recommendations may seem intense, but it’s only for your safety. Here’s the rundown: If and when you start having sex it’s recommended that you have a blood test to check for HIV. In some regions of the United States it is also recommended to check for syphilis. Females having vaginal sex should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia every year they are sexually actively. Males who have sex with men should be tested for gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis every year they are sexually active. If you are symptomatic, seek treatment as soon as possible. For females this might be vaginal itching, pain or discharge. For males this might be penile discharge or pain with urination. If you have sex with multiple partners or use IV drugs you should be checked more often than once a year. Your PCP (primary care physician) should be able to perform testing confidentially. Planned Parenthood also provides STI testing. Find a location near you.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Razor burn describes the irritation of the hair follicles as they exit the skin. It’ll look like little red spots where you shaved, usually happening a day or two after you shaved. If you notice razor burn forming, apply an unscented moisturizer or aloe to soothe the skin. If it’s itchy or really red you can put a low-dose steroid ointment (like hydrocortisone 1%) on your skin once or twice a daily. Don’t shave if you have razor burn because it will make things worse.</image:caption>

<image:title>Shaving tips - Technique</image:title>
<image:caption>Good shaving technique is simple! No matter what area of the body you’re shaving, try a few easy steps. Before you shave, exfoliate the area of your skin that you are shaving (scrub off the dead skin cells). Use a sharp blade every time (new or pretty new). Use a shaving gel or soap every time Shave in the direction that hair grows, not against the hair (if your razor blade is sharp it will work well). After shaving, rinse off with cool water. Moisturize! And most importantly, you don’t need to buy all of those expensive products for shaving. Soap works in place of shaving gel, and aloe or a good moisturizer like Aquaphor can soothe your skin after shaving.</image:caption>

<image:title>Shaving tips - Ingrown hairs</image:title>
<image:caption>Even if you try your hardest with the perfect shaving techniques, ingrown hairs STILL happen. So what can you do about them? Usually, if left alone, they will resolve (go away) on their own. However, if they’re causing you problems you can do a couple of things. If it’s starting to look like a pimple (pus under the skin) try applying either a warm wet washcloth a few times a day or, if it’s on your legs or in your private area, you can soak in the bathtub. This will help it open up and drain. If it’s itching or red, you can also put a steroid ointment (like hydrocortisone 1%) on it to help improve symptoms. BUT if it’s getting bigger or is very tender, it’s worth a trip to the doctor.</image:caption>

<image:title>Foreskin facts - Phimosis</image:title>
<image:caption>Phimosis describes the condition of a foreskin opening that is too tight, making it difficult to pull the foreskin back. The main cause of phimosis is scarring which results from being too forceful in stretching the foreskin over the head of the penis — so don’t do it! Instead, try to let the natural changes that occur during puberty gently stretch the foreskin. However, sometimes phimosis still happens and it’s no one’s fault. Phimosis can happen to varying degrees. You may be able to retract your foreskin when flaccid (not erect), but you’re unable to pull it down when you have an erection. You may not be able to pull it down at all because it’s still connected to the head of the penis (via skin bridges) or because the hole is too small. No matter the degree of your phimosis, it should always be addressed. Phimosis can make cleaning the penis, urinating and/or getting an erection very painful. What you can do on your own is try to gently stretch the foreskin opening every day, but if this doesn’t work you should visit a doctor to discuss other ways to stretch the foreskin. They may give you a special medicine to put on your foreskin to loosen things up (or discuss circumcision as a final option if the foreskin will not stretch).</image:caption>

<image:title>Foreskin facts - Basic care</image:title>
<image:caption>The foreskin is usually of no consequence in daily activities — meaning you really don’t have to mess with it. It stays in place when you pee and protects the penis when you’re walking around. In fact, if you’re just starting to go through puberty you may not have really noticed your foreskin at all…yet. As the penis grows and experiences more erections (during puberty), the foreskin starts to stretch and loosen from the shaft of the penis. This allows you to pull back the foreskin for cleaning, and this IS recommended. Once you’re able to fully pull down your foreskin to the base of your penis, just give it a wash in the shower or bath with a gentle soap and rinse well, returning it to its full-covering position when done. This will help clear out dead skin cells and oil that can build up under the foreskin. Having difficulty pulling down your foreskin? Read on.</image:caption>

<image:title>Foreskin facts - Condoms</image:title>
<image:caption>Worried about using a condom with foreskin? Don’t be. For many, the foreskin retracts on its own and remains relatively tight with erections. If it doesn’t, here are a couple of tips: Add a little extra lube to your penis and rub the condom up and down a couple of times (once it’s on) to get your foreskin up INTO the condom. The lube will allow for easier movement of the foreskin under the condom and should help prevent crumpling/bunching. It may also help to find a condom that is a little wider at the tip. <image:title>Male puberty - Testicles</image:title>
<image:caption>The day-to-day growth that happens during puberty really won’t be noticeable. However, there are a few things that you may notice with a simple check in the shower: One may hang lower than the other One may be slightly bigger than the other There should be two Anything beyond this should be shown to a doctor, including pain. Pain in the testicles can be an emergency. If you have new or severe pain in one testicle, swelling of a testicle or pain to touch of one testicle, get to a doctor right away. It’s important that you do take a feel every once in a while to make sure there aren’t any bumps on the testicles (see the link below for more guidance).</image:caption>

<image:title>Male puberty - Puberty timeline</image:title>
<image:caption>When should you expect changes to start? Or are you worried that you’re falling behind? Don’t worry — everyone is a bit different. Things can happen out of sequence and at different ages. Changes normally start anywhere from the age of 9 through 13, with the average start age around 11.5. Ages 11.5-15: testicles grow Ages 12-15: pubic hair Ages 12-15: penis grows Age 13.5: growth spurt Age 14.5: semen amount increases</image:caption>

<image:title>Male puberty - Body hair</image:title>
<image:caption>During puberty, the areas of the body most likely to develop hair are the armpits and the groin. Facial hair (like a beard and mustache) really doesn’t fill in for most people until WAY after puberty (like their 20s).</image:caption>

<image:title>Male puberty - Penises</image:title>

<image:title>Male puberty - Height</image:title>
<image:caption>The biggest outward sign of puberty is the growth spurt. This is a period of time during which someone’s height increases REALLY FAST. For those with male anatomy, it usually happens toward the end of puberty. Lots of folks are anxious to know how tall they’re going to be, but there’s only one way to know for sure: wait. However, if you’re itching to take a guess, look at your parents. Your height will be similar to your father’s and adjusted up or down depending on your mother’s. Here’s an online calculator that can help you make an “educated” guess:</image:caption>

<image:title>Male puberty - Other parts of puberty</image:title>
<image:caption>There are a few other things that happen during puberty that you should know about. First, it is VERY common to develop a little breast tissue under one or both nipples. It usually goes away within a year or two, but if it sticks around you can chat with your doctor about possible causes and management. Second, you may not get your adult voice until WAY after puberty…which means voice cracks can last for many years. Try to laugh it off and know that your voice drop will be official by your early 20s. Third, muscle bulk usually happens about a year after puberty. If you’re feeling a little skinny toward the end of puberty, don’t worry. You’re totally normal. And speaking of totally normal…if you want to hear more about puberty, check out my podcast. For tweens and parents, we cover some of the main events of puberty and science behind them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Female puberty - Breasts</image:title>
<image:caption>Guess what’s normal! Basically, everything. Breasts develop differently for different people, so here are a few things that should NOT cause you to worry: Lopsided breasts (one is larger than the other) Inverted nipples (on one or both breasts) Little bumps in the areola (around the nipple itself); these are glands Little hairs in the areola Large areola During development (and around the time of your period) it’s also common for breasts to be tender. It’s also a good idea to get to know what your breast tissue feels like when you’re young so that you can pick up on changes as you age.</image:caption>

<image:title>Female puberty - Body hair and skin changes</image:title>
<image:caption>It happens to EVERYONE who goes through puberty — pubic hair. While shaving or waxing is NEVER necessary, many wish to do so. See the link below for shaving tips that reduce skin irritation and ingrown hairs. There are a few other hair and skin changes that you MIGHT not know are also super common: Facial hair (like a thin mustache) can happen in females! This is usually more noticeable in those whose family members also have it (meaning it’s genetic) but it’s usually nothing concerning. If you notice it getting thicker or if you notice strange hair patterns on other parts of the body (like chest or back) then it’s worth talking to your doc. Stretch marks happen to most people to varying degrees. They happen because of the HUGE growth that our bodies experience during puberty. Keep scrolling for a little more information. Cellulite is also incredibly common. It happens more in females than males, and it’s estimated that it occurs in almost 90% of those with female anatomy! Carrying extra weight CAN make it more pronounced, but even thin people get cellulite. It’s just a way our bodies store fat below the skin.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The biggest outward sign of puberty is the growth spurt. This is a period of time during which someone’s height increases REALLY FAST. <image:title>Female puberty - Vaginas vs vulvas</image:title>
<image:caption>Starting with a quick anatomy lesson, the vulva describes the area surrounding the vaginal opening and includes the inner and outer labia. Lots of stuff starts happening in the vulva during puberty. Here’s what’s important to know about a healthy vulva: Skin can be darker Skin can be lighter Labia minora (the inner folds of skin) can be longer or shorter Labia minora can be wrinkly Labia minora can be lopsided Labia can have little dots that look like white pimples—these are sweat glands (Fordyce spots) and are totally normal Clear-white vaginal discharge every day is normal Discharge may smell a little sour or vinegary These changes (like discharge and odor) can make some people feel uncomfortable. However, the vagina actually works very hard to keep things safe and clean — which is why it’s important to never clean INSIDE the vagina.

Specifically, Black females (timeline below) tend to be about 6 months ahead of White females (add 6 months to values below): Ages 9.5-13.5: breasts grow Ages 10-13.5: pubic hair Age 11: growth spurt Age 11.5: vaginal discharge starts Age 12: period starts</image:caption>
